The first session of In the Darkroom will be dedicated to film processing, with the opportunity for those with no film developing experience to learn the process. Please bring at least one exposed but undeveloped roll of black and white film to the first class session.
Students will learn (or expand upon) the basics of processing their own B & W film, of printing from negatives, and the proper workflow of a darkroom, as well as learn to critique their work with colleagues. During critique, we will discuss the technical qualities of the finished prints, as well as the aesthetic choices made. This can be adapted to fit each student’s level of experience.
Students will be encouraged to photograph what excites them, but Russell will offer optional weekly themes as guidance (or challenge). Possible themes might include Portraits (self or others), your life on film, tell a story in 3 frames, unusual vantage points (under/over), DC wildlife.
Materials/Supplies Needed:
A working film camera. Students should have a basic familiarity with the working of the camera and know how to load the film, take a roll of images, and safely unload the roll
5 or more rolls of Kodak Tri-X black and white film or similar
1 box of at least 50 sheets of RC black and white photographic printing paper.
NOTE: For anyone 18 yrs+. Contact photography@chaw.org if you have any specific questions regarding the seminar.
